Aubrey Gillentine Named Head Baseball Coach at Mississippi Delta Community College
By Neshun Holmes
Mississippi Delta Community College has announced the promotion of Aubrey Gillentine to head baseball coach, entrusting the program to a passionate leader with deep knowledge of the game, strong ties to the roster, and a clear vision for the future of Trojan baseball.
"This is something I've always wanted to do in my career—be the head coach of a college baseball program," Gillentine said. "I was fortunate enough to be given that opportunity at a young age, and I'm extremely grateful for it."
Playing Career and Coaching Background
Gillentine brings a strong playing pedigree to the position, having competed at the collegiate level for four years at The University of Southern Mississippi before finishing his playing career at UNC Charlotte. Following college, he spent a year playing independent professional baseball.
While his formal coaching experience began recently, Gillentine credits a lifetime around the game for preparing him for the role.
"I've played baseball at a high level my entire life," Gillentine said. "I may not have a long résumé as a coach yet, but I know the game, I'm passionate about it, and I care deeply about developing players the right way."
Gillentine joined MDCC as pitching coach prior to the fall season and quickly became a key piece of the program's recruiting and player development efforts.
Coaching Philosophy and Approach
As a young coach, Gillentine blends modern baseball strategies with traditional values.
"I consider myself a new-school coach with an old-school approach," he explained. "I like the analytics side of baseball and the technology that comes with the game today, but when it comes to mentality, work ethic, and team chemistry, I believe in doing things the old-school way."
Gillentine emphasized the importance of camaraderie, accountability, and shared goals as the foundation of his coaching philosophy.
Immediate Priorities and Program Stability
Entering his first season as head coach, Gillentine's immediate focus is continuity and stability.
"My first priority is finding the right assistant coach," he said. "The next biggest priority is keeping our current group together. Losing a head coach around Christmas is never easy, but getting our guys to buy into the vision and rally together as we approach the season is critical."
With the season approaching quickly, Gillentine believes unity will be key to early success.
Commitment to Player Development
Gillentine views junior college baseball as a vital development stage for student-athletes.
"Players come to junior college to be developed," he said. "My goal for every player is to help them reach their highest potential—whether that's in the weight room, on the field, or in the classroom."
He added that development looks different for every athlete, and his staff will work to address each player's specific needs.
"We're going to attack whatever area each player needs to improve the most. We have guys here who can play at the next level, and I'm committed to doing everything I can to help them get there."
Recruiting Philosophy and Future Talent
As MDCC's former recruiting coordinator, Gillentine has already made a strong impact on the program's future. The Trojans signed 12 players in the fall, a class that has drawn praise from coaches around the league.
"We've been told this could be one of the most talented recruiting classes Mississippi Delta has ever had," Gillentine said. "There's a lot of talent out there, but we're looking for guys who have both the ability and the character to help build this program."
Gillentine noted that while talent is essential, character and fit within the program's culture are equally important.
"If we don't bring in the right kind of people, we'll never reach our full potential," he said.
Community Support and Program Growth
Gillentine stressed the importance of community involvement in the success of Trojan baseball.
"We're all in this together," he said. "There's been a lot of excitement building around this program, and the support we've received through fundraising and community involvement has been tremendous."
He hopes to see that momentum continue throughout the season.
"This doesn't stop once the season starts," Gillentine said. "We want to keep building, keep growing, and make this program what we all want it to be."
A Meaningful Opportunity
When asked what it means to lead the MDCC baseball program, Gillentine spoke with gratitude and purpose.
"It means the world to me," he said. "I've gotten to know these guys and build relationships with them, and being trusted to lead this program is something I will never take lightly. It's a special opportunity at this point in my career."
Gillentine and the Trojans will open the upcoming season next month as the program looks to turn excitement into results on the field.
