Trojans Split double header, Gillentine Secures First Career Head Coaching Victory
The Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans opened their February 13 slate with a hard-fought split in Millington, Tennessee, earning a dramatic extra-inning victory over Lincoln Land Community College before dropping the second contest to Kaskaskia.
Game 1: MDCC Defeats Lincoln Land in Extra Innings
The Trojans faced early adversity, falling behind 6–0 in the second inning following a challenging frame on the mound. Rather than folding, Mississippi Delta steadily chipped away behind strong relief pitching and timely offensive execution. Gabe Pipkins (#30) entered in relief and delivered 3.1 scoreless innings while striking out four to stabilize the game and keep the Loggers' offense in check. Winn White (#10) followed with 1.1 innings of relief to help maintain momentum. Offensively, the comeback began in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs, Liam Gonzalez (#3) delivered a triple that brought home Preston Anderson (#23) and Luke Sims (#19), trimming the deficit to four. Anderson added an RBI single in the fifth to continue the rally.
In the sixth inning, the Trojans took control by plating three runs off key hits from Luke Sims (#19), Liam Gonzalez (#3), Avery Rodgers (#20), and Connor Counts (#28), giving MDCC the lead heading into the late innings. Sophomore closer Hayes Daniel (#17) shut down Lincoln Land over two innings of work before the Loggers managed to push across two runs in the top of the ninth to extend the contest. The Trojans responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Dowe McGowan (#34) delivered an RBI single, Braysier Cox (#8) reached on a bunt, and Luke Sims capped the comeback with a walk-off double down the right field line to secure the extra-inning victory.
Following the game, Head Coach Gillentine praised his team's resilience.
"I was extremely proud of the way our guys stayed in the fight the whole game," Gillentine said. "It would have been really easy to hang our heads and become defeated after falling behind 6–0 in the second, but we just kept chipping away."
Gillentine also emphasized the team effort behind the win.
"Seventeen different players entered the game for us in many big situations that helped us win. It took all 32 guys in that dugout pulling together for us to make that happen. That was a really talented opponent that we just played, and being able to win it in the way that we did should give us a lot of confidence moving forward this season."
The victory marked the first career head coaching win for Gillentine.
"For this game to go the way it did and for it to be my first ever win as a head coach is really special. It is something I will never forget," Gillentine said. "I'm really proud to be able to share this moment with the guys in our dugout. I also would like to acknowledge Coach Bianco and how much of an impact he has made on this team and my career already. This win is just as much a testament to his work as it is mine. I also would like to thank my wife and my entire family who have believed in me and supported me during this journey. Your love and support has not gone unnoticed and I am forever grateful for all the sacrifices they have made for me over the years."
Game 2: Trojans Fall to Kaskaskia
In the second game of the day, MDCC once again faced an early deficit as Kaskaskia jumped out to a 4–0 lead in the first inning. The Blue Devils limited the Trojans offensively throughout the contest.
Kaskaskia pitcher Brady Phillips (#21) held MDCC to just two runs on two hits across 4.2 innings of work. The Trojans scored both of their runs in the top of the fifth inning when Avery Rodgers (#20) delivered a two-RBI single, bringing home Connor Counts (#28) and DJ Temple (#4). However, Mississippi Delta was unable to generate additional momentum and ultimately fell 11–2.
After the game, Gillentine addressed the team's performance.
"I was disappointed with the way that we started this game after such an exciting ending to the first game," Gillentine said. "We have got to do a better job starting games fast so we aren't always trying to dig ourselves out of a hole. Starting games fast is going to be a big emphasis for us next week during our preparation, and I expect our guys to respond better moving forward."
The Trojans leave opening day with valuable momentum from a signature comeback victory and clear areas of focus as they continue early-season play.
