Corey Holmes named to Roughriders all-time team
Corey Holmes, a former Mississippi Delta Community College gridiron standout, was recently named to The Sports Network (TSN's) Canadian Football League (CFL) all-time team for the Saskatchewan Roughriders as a special teamer.
Holmes, who played at MDCC during the 1997 and 1998 seasons, had a breakout season in the CFL in 2002 when he scored seven touchdowns and had 1,035 kickoff return yards and 1,023 punt return yards. He was also named a Western Division all-star, CFL Special Teams Player of the Year and MVP of the Roughriders as voted on by the players.
After an injury plagued 2003 season, Holmes had 635 rushing yards, 536 receiving yards and led the league with 2,704 combined yards in 2004. The 2005 season was one for the ages for Holmes, who set a franchise record and was third all-time in the CFL for combined yards with 3,455. This led to him being named the CFL's Special Teams Player of the week four times, along with being named the CFL's Most Outstanding Special Teams Player, a CFL all-star and a selection as the Roughriders Most Popular Player as voted on by the fans.
Holmes, the former mayor of Metcalfe, Miss. and a Greenville native, spent the 1999 and 2000 seasons at nearby Mississippi Valley State University, where he was named to the college's Sports Hall of Fame after rushing for 2,897 yards and 21 touchdowns.
