MOORHEAD – The Mississippi Delta Community College football team will finally return to game action on Saturday after a near-month hiatus from game competition, when the Trojans welcome Northwest Community College to Jim Randall Stadium in Moorhead at 2 p.m. The contest will also mark the annual Homecoming game for the Trojans, with the queen being crowned at halftime.
The last and only time MDCC has played in 2020 was Friday, Oct. 9, when Delta hosted Northeast Community College and fell to the Tigers, 40-23.
MDCC (0-1) was scheduled to host Holmes Community College on Oct. 17, but the Bulldogs were on a two-week delay due to COVID-19. After the Trojans took a two-week COVID break themselves, Itawamba Community College was on a two-week break and was forced to postpone the Oct. 31 matchup between MDCC and ICC.
Northwest is off to a 2-0 start after a thrilling 16-14 win over Itawamba on Oct. 15 and then a 34-28 overtime victory over Northeast on Oct. 22. The Rangers were set to face Coahoma Community College on Thursday, Oct. 29, but the game was postponed due to the Tigers of CCC being on a two-week break because of COVID-19.
Delta was led offensively by the tandem of quarterback Jordan Gilleylen (Tupelo) and wide receiver Lorenzo Perez (Clarksdale) in the season opener versus Northeast. The left-handed arm of Gilleylen was 25-38 for 305 yards and two touchdowns versus the Tigers, with both of his TD's to Perez, who had six receptions for 112 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Trojans were led by Latarius Embry (Maben), a sophomore linebacker who had a big game in the 2020 opener. He finished the evening with six tackles, two sacks and one fumble recovery.
The Northwest offense will be led by quarterback Michael Hiers and running back Jaquerrious Williams. Hiers is currently 40-59 for 508 yards and three touchdowns, while Williams had carried the ball 34 times for 175 yards and three touchdowns.
