Trojans Enter Conference Play Focused on Growth, Chemistry, and the Road Ahead
By Neshun Holmes
As the Mississippi Delta Community College men's basketball team opens conference play, the Trojans do so as a program built on new faces, developing chemistry, and long-term vision.
With four starters from last season either graduated or moving on to four-year programs, this year's roster has undergone a significant overhaul. Anchored by a lone returning veteran, the Trojans welcomed a diverse group of newcomers, each bringing a unique skill set and energy to the floor. While the talent is evident, developing cohesion has been the team's greatest challenge.
That learning curve showed throughout non-conference play. MDCC opened the season with a 4–0 start, followed by a six-game skid, before closing the semester with a win to finish 5–6 overall. The stretch highlighted both the Trojans' potential and the reality of a team still learning how to play together.
Now, conference play presents the ultimate proving ground.
Coach Fears noted, "The talent is there; what we need now is reliability, stability, and brotherhood."
For MDCC to succeed, growth will come not from individual stardom but from collective consistency. As the season progresses, the goal is for the Trojans to evolve from a group of talented individuals into a unified, battle-tested unit which is something the program has historically achieved as the year unfolds.
The Trojans continue conference action tonight, January 12, as they travel to face the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Wolves at 7:30 p.m. in Wesson. The matchup marks MDCC's third conference game of the season, following an 89–81 win over the Royal Ambassadors on January 6 and a 69–58 loss to the Louisiana Knights on January 8.
As conference play intensifies, MDCC understands the margin for error is slim in a league that "waits for no one." Still, with steady leadership, growing chemistry, and belief in the process, the Trojans are focused on becoming their best version when it matters most.
By March, the goal is clear: turn raw talent into a hardened, cohesive unit ready for the conference tournament.
