Trojans Headed to Senatobia to Tangle with Rangers
By Mark H. Stowers
Still looking for that first win of the season on the scoreboard, the Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans (0-6, hit I-55 Thursday night to tangle with the Northwest Rangers. With a 5-1 overall record and 2-1 in the MACCC North, the Rangers are nationally ranked in the NJCAA sitting at #5 behind Mississippi Gulf Coast at #4. Copiah Lincoln hits the list at #10, Hinds sits at #13 and Jones is at #15. Itawamba also received votes. Click here for full rankings.
"There are five nationally ranked team in our league and we play four of them," Head Coach Ernest Jones said. "I told the team they (Northwest) look like the Dallas Cowboys."
The Trojans lost their homecoming matchup with Holmes last week, 47-0. The team roster has been hit hard with injuries and Coach Jones will be using a third quarterback and running a Wildcat formation against the Rangers.
"They're practicing hard. We've got good kids, but our numbers are going down and down and down. We keep getting more injuries," Coach Jones said. "You're going to see a lot of motions and movements and, you know. I mean, but it's not going to be hard for a team like that to zero in that we're going to run the football if we can't throw it. So, I mean, we're going to have some throws in there, but the guy (#34 Shamane Clark) played running back."
The Trojans will incorporate some passing to keep Northwest's defense honest and prevent everything from stacking the line of scrimmage to stop the run. Coach Jones also plans to slow down the game to keep the Northwest offense on the sidelines or out of rhythm when they're on the field as much as possible.
"We're going to try to slow the game down, snap the ball with three seconds left on the clock, and on defense, lie on top of them until the referee pulls us off," he said. I've seen a lot of football in my life, so I'm gonna go into my toolbox and do this, but we'll figure it out."
And playing in Senatobia will be key for his players.
"We're excited, we're gonna play the number one team in the state at their place, it's gonna be a great atmosphere, great venue. All of our guys say they want to be Division I players. Well, here you go, go make a play for this team," Coach Jones said. "We're still pushing hard. The guys, the kids are doing a great job in the classroom. They're doing a great job on the playing surface. We just got to try to get them to go compete for four quarters, not one, not two, not three, but all four."
