#5 Rangers Show Outmuscle Trojans for 51-0 Homecoming Win
By Mark H. Stowers
Homecoming in Senatobia for the #5 nationally ranked Northwest Rangers was a David and Goliath matchup. But David didn't have near enough rocks for this fight. The overmatched Trojans fell, 51-0, to the Rangers. The loss was number seven for MDCC with no wins to offset. They are 0-4 in the MACCC North. The #5 Rangers moved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the MACCC North.
The Trojans had a flash of luck when on the sixth play of the Rangers' opening drive, Lacoyrius Branch intercepted a Neko Fann pass at the MDCC 32 and returned it to the 37. But the Trojans' luck ended there as their first offensive play was a false start penalty followed by a two-yard run by Cayson Williams. Freshman Mitchell Davis was under center and was sacked for a loss, and fumbled the football, and Northwest's Jerry Wall scooped it up and ran in for the score from the Trojan 21-yard line. The PAT made it 7-0 with 12:11 left in the first quarter.
The Trojans could only muster three total yards on their next possession and punted and the Rangers returned it to the MDCC 12-yard line. Northwest then picked up their second touchdown on a third and four at the Trojan six yard line as Fann hit M.J. Johnson with the touchdown pass. The PAT made it 14-0 with 8:47 left in the first quarter.
After another Trojan three-and-out, the Rangers put together a 12-play, 47-yard drive that stalled at the MDCC 18-yard line. The Rangers' Hayden Wolfe put a 25 yard field goal through the uprights to extend their lead to 17-0.
Northwest added 20 more points in the second quarter including two field goals (37- and 25-yards) and two touchdowns a Fann rush of two yards and a Fann 34-yard TD pass to Lantavious Murphy. One of those touchdowns came after the Trojans misplayed a kickoff from the Rangers when a fair catch was called but then not caught and the ball landed at the two yard line. The Rangers headed into the locker room up 37-0 as their homecoming festivities took the field.
In the second half, the Rangers put up seven points in both the third and fourth quarter as they emptied the bench. The Rangers scored in the third with 9:30 left on a Julius Pope 27-yard TD run. The PAT made it 44-0 in favor of Northwest. The Rangers added another TD on a seven-play, 53-yard drive capped by a five-yard TD run by Jaden Copening. The PAT made it 51-0 for Northwest.
